WP1 Aquaculture regions in Europe
Objectives: a) develop a detailed baseline understanding of European aquaculture hubs; b) conduct qualitative case studies in different European regions based on interviews with both representatives of aquaculture firms and other local stakeholders (politicians, authorities, and representatives of civic society such as consumers, environmental protection NGOs, etc.) to develop rich qualitative dataset; c) develop a shared taxonomy of business model typologies in aquaculture to map drivers and challenges for developing impactful sustainable aquaculture business models in various regions; d) develop potential solutions and toolkits for targeted research impact through a series of workshops with relevant stakeholders.
WP2 Aquaculture technology and supply chains
Objectives: a) provide an overview of the various technological options (mature as well as novel technologies) that are relevant to the European aquaculture industry; b) map providers to the European aquaculture industry of technical equipment and services (e.g. farming systems, digital solutions), biotechnology solutions (e.g., feed, vaccines), and logistics (e.g. sea transport services); c) conduct a socio-technical configuration analysis of aquaculture technology (e.g., conventional, offshore, closed) and feed production systems; d) analyse how the upscaling possibilities of different novel technologies vary across the regions under study.
WP3 Social legitimacy of the aquaculture industry
Objectives: a) analyse consumer preferences for aquaculture products from both societal and market perspectives considering socio-demographic segments of consumers and their food-related lifestyles; b) investigate preference heterogeneity in relation to different European regions, production systems, subsegments of the industry (salmon, mussels, etc.) and distance to sites hosting aquaculture-related activities; c) assess the effect of sustainability-related information on consumer preferences for aquaculture products and citizen attitudes towards the environmental and social impacts of the aquaculture industry; d) develop toolkits for the aquaculture industry and its related supply chain to empower effective communication of the industry’s sustainability efforts to citizens and consumers.
WP4 Policy mix for sustainable aquaculture industry
Objectives: a) establish a lab for policy experimentation where we will invite a broad group of stakeholders (policymakers, industry organizations, public service providers, regional and national authorities, and civil society representatives) to discuss how to design a regulatory regime for sustainable aquaculture; b) develop pan-European and regional policy recommendations; c) communicate these recommendations to the relevant stakeholders in a series of workshops; d) establish a policy roadmap.
WP5 Outreach and impact
Objectives: a) develop, revise and regularly update an outreach and impact plan; b) ensure project communication channels are developed and maintained throughout the project lifetime; c) ensure project outputs, including bespoke information packages tailored to the needs of multiple stakeholders, are disseminated at all stages throughout the project; d) provide an ongoing knowledge exchange between other relevant initiatives; e) establish and implement an uptake and impact roadmap to ensure the project outputs are used beyond the project.
WP6 Management
Objectives: a) ensure timely, effective and successful delivery of the project; b) provide a high level of administrative, contractual, financial and managerial support; c) set up an effective management structure and procedures including the Steering Committee (SC) and the Stakeholder Advisory Board (SAB); d) report to the Partnership secretariat in full compliance with contractual obligations and other reporting requirements. See section 3 for more details on project coordination and management.
